Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered Windows With New Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft is taking a bold step into the future of computing by integrating generative AI deeply into its Windows operating system. At their recent Build developer conference, Microsoft introduced Copilot+ PCs, a new line of Windows machines designed to harness the power of AI. Alongside these PCs, they announced innovative features like Recall, which helps users effortlessly locate apps, files, and other content they’ve interacted with previously. The company also unveiled updates to their Surface devices, promising enhanced performance and battery life.

The Copilot+ PCs are at the heart of Microsoft’s vision for an AI-first future. These machines come equipped with dedicated Neural Processing Units (NPUs) to power advanced AI capabilities, including the Recall feature. Each Copilot+ PC starts with a minimum of 16GB of RAM and solid-state drive (SSD) storage, ensuring high performance and reliability.

The first models will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite and Plus chips, boasting impressive battery life—up to 15 hours of web browsing and 20 hours of video playback. Major chip manufacturers like Intel and AMD are also onboard, working with top PC makers like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung to deliver a diverse range of Copilot+ devices. Prices for these AI-enhanced PCs start at $999, with some models available for preorder now.

Microsoft’s latest Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models have also received significant upgrades. The new Surface Laptop, available in 13.8-inch and 15-inch versions, features modern design elements like thinner bezels and enhanced performance—up to 86% faster than the previous generation. It also supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard and includes a haptic feedback touchpad. Battery life is another strong suit, with up to 22 hours on a single charge.

The new Surface Pro offers even more power, being up to 90% faster than its predecessor. It includes a stunning OLED display with HDR support, Wi-Fi 7, optional 5G connectivity, and an upgraded ultrawide front-facing camera. The detachable keyboard now features haptic feedback and added durability thanks to reinforced carbon fiber.

One of the standout features coming to Windows 11 is Recall. This innovative tool helps users quickly find apps and content they’ve accessed in the past, making it easier to locate everything from a specific Discord chat to a PowerPoint slide. Recall can create associations between colors, images, and other data, enabling users to perform natural language searches. Microsoft emphasizes that all data used by Recall remains private and stored locally on the device.

Additional AI features include Super Resolution, which can restore old photos by upscaling them automatically, and Cocreator, which allows users to generate and modify images using AI. Live Captions with live translations is another exciting addition, capable of translating any audio passing through the PC into one of 40 supported languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Russian.

At the core of these AI advancements is the Windows Copilot Runtime, a robust collection of around 40 generative AI models. This technology layer enables various AI-powered applications to function even without an internet connection. Notably, popular video editing software CapCut, from ByteDance, will leverage the Windows Copilot Runtime to enhance its AI features.
