Meta’s social media platform Threads has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 200 million active users. This achievement comes just a day after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the platform’s rapid growth during the company’s Q2 2024 earnings call.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the news on Threads, expressing his excitement about the platform’s progress. “I’m excited to share that we crossed the 200M milestone on @threads,” Mosseri wrote. “My hope is that Threads can inspire ideas that bring people together and this amazing community continues to grow.”
Threads, a text-focused social media platform launched in July 2023, has shown remarkable growth. It reached 150 million users in April 2024 and 175 million users by its one-year anniversary in July. The latest surge to 200 million users came just a month later, reflecting the platform’s increasing popularity.
For context, Threads’ main competitor, X (formerly Twitter), had over 600 million monthly users as of May, according to owner Elon Musk. The decline of legacy Twitter under Musk’s management, marked by frequent changes that alienated many long-time users, was a driving factor behind Meta’s launch of Threads. The goal was to provide an alternative space for online discussion, attracting users disenchanted with Twitter’s new direction.
Last year, Zuckerberg expressed optimism about Threads’ potential, suggesting it has a “good chance” of surpassing a billion users. On the latest earnings call, he reiterated this positive outlook, highlighting the platform’s strong growth trajectory. “We’re making steady progress towards building what looks like it’s going to be another major social app. And we are seeing deeper engagement,” he said. “I’m quite pleased with the trajectory here.”
Threads’ rapid ascent underscores its appeal as a platform for text-based interactions, offering a fresh alternative in the social media landscape. As it continues to grow, Threads aims to foster a community where ideas can flourish and users can connect meaningfully.
